5 Ways to Reset Your Skincare & Makeup Routine For The New Year
The start of a new year is full of fresh promise. For me, there’s something so satisfying about cracking open a fresh planner or giving my home a deep clean.
It’s the perfect time to vacuum the mattress, thoroughly clean the pillows, and—yes—finally see what treasures (or horrors) have accumulated under the couch.
This "spring cleaning" mindset doesn’t have to stop at your home. Why not extend it to your beauty and skincare routine?
The best part? A beauty deep clean doesn’t need to cost you a cent.
1. Check for Mould in Those Huge Products
Have you ever bought a big bottle of skincare, only to realise halfway through the year that it’s barely halfway gone?
Those oversized containers of serums, cleansers, or even body lotions can be breeding grounds for mould, especially if they’re hanging out in the shower/bathroom/any humid environment.
Pop the lid off and take a good look. Any change in colour, texture, or smell could be a red flag. Noticed something funky?
It’s time to say goodbye.
2. Check Expiry Dates on Your Beauty Arsenal
Checking the expiry date is surprisingly easy. Look for a tiny jar icon (known as the PAO symbol) with a number like "6M" or "12M" printed on the packaging.
This tells you how many months the product is good for after opening. Beyond that, experts typically suggest tossing anything that smells "off," separates, or irritates your skin (but yikes, it’s a lot to wait until something makes you itch?!).
Mascaras and liquid eyeliners should usually be replaced every three months, while powders like blushes and eyeshadows can often last up to two years if stored properly.
3. Deep Clean Your Brushes and Tools
When was the last time you properly cleaned your makeup brushes or sponges? If the answer is "longer than I care to admit," you’re not alone.
Brushes collect oil, bacteria, dead skin, and old makeup over time, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts.
All you need is a gentle shampoo or baby soap (a great budget-friendly option). Swirl your brushes under warm water with a little soap, rinse thoroughly, and reshape the bristles before leaving them to air dry.
As for sponges, soak them in soapy water, gently squeeze out the gunk, and rinse until the water runs clear. Your skin will thank you.
4. Demote Products That Aren’t Working for You
Sometimes, we’re tempted to force a product to fit into our routine because it was expensive, trendy, or hyped.
But if something isn’t bringing you joy—or worse, it’s irritating your skin—it’s okay to let it go. You (and your skin) know best.
That doesn’t mean throwing it out, though. If you’ve got a moisturiser or serum that feels "meh" on your face, consider using it on your body instead.
Products like this can work wonders on dry elbows, knees, or even your feet.
For anything that’s truly making your skin angry, it’s best to stop using it altogether.
Similarly, it’s a good time to reassess your daily routine. Are you genuinely reaching for these products because you love them, or are they there out of habit?
Be honest with yourself, and give your skin the love it deserves by simplifying your lineup to the essentials.
