6 Makeup Myths you Need to Send Back to 2007

Makeup can be a fun and expressive way to show off your personality, but it’s easy to get bogged down by outdated rules.

Let’s set the record straight and embrace the beauty of modern makeup techniques.

Some of the old rules were more clear cut to help makeup noobs, some were a reflection of some of the product limitations we had at that time, our limited understanding of skincare etc-

Other rules were and are rooted in more western ideals of beauty, which I find very morbid.

Challenging these myths was freeing, and my makeup has never looked better.

The day I realised the goal of makeup wasn’t to make my small set eyes look bigger, was the day I enjoyed my eyes for how they are and not what I could make them look like.

Maybe one day I’ll feel the same about my nose too, but I won’t hold my breath for that one, ha.

Let’s jump into it!

  1. Myth: Full Coverage Foundation is Cakey

Truth: Full coverage foundation formulations have come such a long way and can be sheered out wherever you want it.

If you have multiple spots you want to cover, don’t bother with spot concealing—go in with an elegant full coverage foundation and thank me later!

Plus- the resurgence of clean girl makeup felt…weird? For lack of a better word.

Being told I can get the clean girl look with two dots of concealer just didn’t cut it.

To get the same result, you might just need something more- and that’s ok.

I got to enjoy my own clean girl look that consisted of a flawless base thanks to my full coverage pick of choice, so here’s your reminder it’s ok to tweak trends to suit you and your skin.

A few picks I can vouch for that bring the coverage us spotty girls might be after:

2. Myth: Don’t Put Shimmer in Your Crease

Truth: Shimmer in your crease can look absolutely angelic and even BETTER than no shimmer at all! It’s time to break out of the matte-only mindset.

Try it! This might be (will be) the hill I die on.

Ever notice how the high end quads that are aimed at more mature wearers (with classically hooded, creasy eyes) tend to have a sheen and shimmer to them?

Dimension is flattering, and depth can come from shades rather than finish.

3. Myth: Hooded Eyes Need a Dramatic Wing for Eyeliner

Truth: You can totally rock a kitten wing! Experiment with different eyeliner shapes using eyeshadow to map it out first.

Find what feels right for you and go for it.

Not all hooded eyes are the same, and our goal isn’t forever to make our eyes look bigger

My steps for perfect eyeliner:

1. Short strokes up from my lower lash line
2. Don’t go up or over the hood (unless you want to, ofc)
3. Keep it little, way smaller than I’d like, because I always mess up and get bigger
4. Load on fluffy mascara because they never match anyway

4. Myth: You Need to Apply Makeup in a Particular Order

Truth: There’s no set order for makeup.

Feel free to switch things up!

Reassessing your makeup at the end of your routine is the best way to tie everything together and ensure a cohesive look.

So- guilt free- top up that cream blush after setting. It’ll be ok, I promise! (If you’re extra stressed, dampen the skin with a mist first)

5. Myth: Matte Makeup is Unflattering

Truth: Matte makeup is so awesome and is coming back in trend with cloud skin—but honestly, matte makeup never went out!

Many people still rock it even though glowy is having its moment.

The key to gorgeous matte makeup looks is usually wonderful and hydrating skin prep alongside a setting mist to settle down any powers or drier finishes.

Add types of dimension and shimmer (if you want) through shimmery and glowy blushes.

Up close and personal to my usual go to matte makeup base

6. Myth: Eyeshadow Looks Need to be Perfect and Structured

Truth: Less put-together eyeshadow looks that are fluffy and blended (almost “imperfect”) can be more flattering!

Don’t stress about perfection. Sometimes, a bit of spontaneity can create the most beautiful results.

I personally like just using an eyeshadow stick for a effortless look (yes, it can be a shimmer and be used all over- it’s wonderful I promise)

Some of the eyeshadow sticks I love as someone with hooded, creasy eyes:

Remember, makeup is about self-expression and creativity. There’s no one-size-fits-all rule.

Embrace what makes you feel confident and beautiful!

Let me know what makeup rule letting go of helped your makeup game, I’d love to know.
