The 13 Fragrances To Test While In MECCA
Diptyque L’Eau Papier EDT, From $215.00
Shop: Diptyque L’Eau Papier EDT, From $215.00 at MECCA →
My definitive and favourite linear rice scent. This is what the folklore cardigan would smell like if it had a scent.
Inspired by journaling and the art of putting pen to paper, it smells like a steaming bowl of rice topped with toasted sesame seeds. A beta blocker scent of mine for sure.
Fragrance notes noted by the brand: White musks, Mimosa, Blonde woods accord, Rice steam accord.
Phlur Father Figure, From $53.00
Shop: Phlur Father Figure, From $53.00 at MECCA →
Possibly my easiest reach in my entire perfume collection (outside of my linear musks anyway).
This is an aquatic, green, lightly sweet fig fragrance. It’s unisex, so it’s shareable with whoever your s.o. is, and the idea of sharing a scent is so sexy to me. Very more-ish.
Fragrance notes noted by the brand: Waterlily, Lush Fig, Cassis Buds, Orris Root, Iris Flower, Jasmine Dew, Skin Musks, Vanilla Madagascar, Patchouli Leaf, Sandalwood.
Ellis Brooklyn Salt Eau de Parfum, From $54.00
Shop: Ellis Brooklyn Salt Eau de Parfum, From $54.00 at MECCA →
This is my favourite linear salt fragrance. It’s salt crystals, yes, but the scent avoids becoming too mineralic and ‘biting’ through the addition of some soft florals. So mermaid coded, and I refuse to live without her.
Fragrance notes noted by the brand: Ylang ylang, violet leaves absolute, tahitian tiare, magnolia dianica, musk, ambergris (vegan) and sandalwood.
Dedcool Xtra Milk, From $19.00
Shop: Dedcool Xtra Milk, From $19.00 at MECCA →
(Petition for Mecca to get all new stock so I can restock my favourite Dedcool scents with the new lids.) Xtra Milk is genuinely that girl. It’s been said to smell like the Nemat amber oil, which I haven’t smelt, but if this is the vibe? Sign me up.
This is a warm, ambery, musky scent that is kinda oily in consistency, which makes it the best base for layering. Genuinely one of a kind, and it’s the scent all hot girls* wear (girls here is gender neutral).
Fragrance notes: Bergamot, white musk, amber.
Glossier You Doux Eau de Parfum, From $18.00
Shop: Glossier You Doux Eau de Parfum, From $18.00 at MECCA →
Choosing just one You flanker was so hard, but based on how many other salty scents I had here, I decided to go with Doux.
This is the original dna – so musk, ambrette – then with some creamy woods, clean resins and the idea of a smoky palo santo. It smells like Europe to me, and also like your best friend’s swiss chalet.
Fragrance notes: Top notes: Sweet Violet. Middle notes: Palo Santo, Frankincense, Myrrh. Bottom notes: Ambrox, Ambrette.
Dries Van Noten Soie Malaquais Eau de Parfum, From $550.00
Shop: Dries Van Noten Soie Malaquais Eau de Parfum, From $550.00 at MECCA →
Dries Van Noten is such a chic house, and yes they’re expensive, but no one is doing what they are.
This is the chicest, most elegant chestnut and cocoa scent ever. It smells like spending a white christmas with your loved ones in a nyc penthouse apartment. Gourmand notes are present, but it’s not super edible, so lush.
Fragrance notes: Bergamot, Blackcurrant, Rose, Silk, Chestnut, Cocoa.
Floral Street Arizona Bloom, From $53.00
Shop Floral Street Arizona Bloom, From $53.00 at MECCA →
This is a salty coconut that doesn’t give sunscreen at all. The coconut isn’t overly milky or creamy, it’s more like the coconut fruit and some coconut water.
The salt smells like sea mist, which adds to the visuals this fragrance gives me. Oak moss and fig leaf keep it green and fresh, and then it has this gorgeous almost skin-like musk.
Fragrance notes: Balinese coconut, madagascan black pepper, oak moss and salted musks.
Go-To Into The Garden Perfume Oil, $45.00
Shop: Go-To Into The Garden Perfume Oil, $45.00 at MECCA →
I loved all three scents that were launched, but this is my current favourite. This is a true white floral scent, but it’s a little citrusy in the top, it has some gorgeous green notes there and it’s herbal.
It is the epitome of a cool girl white floral, and if you think white florals are dated, you need to get your nose on this because it will change your life.
Fragrance notes: Top: Lemon, coriander, honey, and gardenia. Heart: Tuberose, ylang-ylang, jasmine, freesia, and hyacinth. Base: Sandalwood, vanilla, solar accord, musk, and oakmoss accord.
Maison Crivelli Rose Saltifolia EDP, From $173.00
Shop: Maison Crivelli Rose Saltifolia EDP, From $173.00 at MECCA →
This house has some incredible scents, and I know everyone talks about Hibiscus Mahajad, but my top pick is Rose Saltifolia.
This is a true rose scent, with a gorgeous ocean water vibe and then a genuine seaweed note (maybe the only seaweed note I’ve ever smelt). It smells like a beachside proposal featuring huge bouquets of red roses.
Fragrance notes: Blood orange essential oil, pink peppercorn essential oil, rose Centifolia absolute, seaweed absolute and cashmeran.
Maison Margiela By the Fireplace, From $60.00
Shop: Maison Margiela By the Fireplace, From $60.00 at MECCA →
Maison Margiela Replica was the fragrance brand that got me into niche perfumes – I am still so flabbergasted that they made liquid smell so vividly like these experiences.
By the Fireplace is a chestnuty, woody, lightly vanillic smoky scent. It’s smoky, but it doesn’t smell like arson, and it’s just so sexy and chic to me. Bonus points because this layers with so many other scents.
Fragrance notes: Chestnut Accord, Red Berries, Clove Oil, Cashmeran, Cade, Guaiac Wood, Balsam, Vanilla, Orange Blossom, Pink Pepper.
The Maker Libertine Eau de Parfum, From $69.00
Shop: The Maker Libertine Eau de Parfum, From $69.00 at MECCA →
I love a true citrus scent, and this is one of the best out there. It’s a rindy, juicy, zesty citrus scent with this woody greenness and sexy muskiness as well.
What sets this apart is that it has incredible longevity and projection, and also the starfruit and hibiscus give it a vaguely poolside vibe that I’m really into.
Fragrance notes: Awakening Pomelo, Uninhibited Hibiscus, Provocative Cedarwood.
Vilhelm Parfumerie Mango Skin Eau de Parfum, From $280.00
Shop: Vilhelm Parfumerie Mango Skin Eau de Parfum, From $280.00 at MECCA →
This is still the best linear mango scent out there. It’s the perfect blend of a mango nectar scent, but at no point is it cloyingly sweet.
I don’t get any of the pepper or patchouli that’s on the notes list, which is great for me. The fruity scent for warm weather.
Fragrance notes: Blackberries, Mango, Black Pepper, Wild Orris, Black Lotus, Jasmin, Patchouli, Vanilla, Pink Sugar.
D.S. & Durga I Don’t Know What, From $287.00
Shop: D.S. & Durga I Don’t Know What, From $287.00 at MECCA →
Named after that certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ some people just have. This is a fragrance enhancer, so it was kind of made to be layered, but it’s so sexy alone as well.
It’s a woody molecular musk unlike anything else I’ve ever found.
The iso e super on here is crackly (almost like static), woody and a little dry and spicy to my nose. The kind of fragrance that has to be experienced because it’s just that stunning.
Fragrance notes: Bergamot Essence, Iso E Super, Vetiver Acetate, Civettone, Firsantol, Ambrox Super.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re after a calming linear rice, a mermaid-coded salt, a smoky chestnut or a one-of-a-kind musk, there’s something here worth blotting onto a test strip.
Treat this as your sniffing guide and let your nose lead the way next time you’re in Mecca.
