Free Skincare Tips That Will Change Your Skin (No Purchase Required)

The skin-enthusiast world can be overwhelming, with brands and influencers quick to share new fun finds.

Though there’s nothing wrong with that, complicating a routine before you’ve got clarity on your existing steps can irritate your skin, working against your skin goals.

The firm belief that I harp on about to anyone who will listen is: knowing how to use your skincare is just as important as what you’re using.

Why? Our skin is our largest organ and has a gentle microbiome balance and skin barrier that’s sensitive to our environment and what we use on it.

I’ve learnt from years of trying new skincare, happy skin is typically the recipient of lots of TLC and consistency. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy new, but auditing your routine is essential.

Let’s go through some of my favourite free skincare tips for happy skin, no extra products or spendy serum required.

Apply Serums to Damp Skin

If your face feels tighter or drier after applying a hydrating serum, the application method is likely the culprit.

It’s an easy fix, thankfully. After cleansing, don’t fully dry your skin before applying your next step.

A little water residue – think damp or “waterlogged”, not dripping – makes serums more spreadable and helps them go further, which also means you go through your products more slowly (yay for saving product).

This tip ties into transepidermal water loss (also known as TEWL), the reason why you shouldn’t let your skin go “bone dry” before hydrating steps.

TEWL is the process by which moisture escapes the skin while it’s damp, before it’s been properly sealed in.

Emulsify Your Cleansing Balm (Get it Milky)

Cleansing balms aren’t cheap. So if you’re slapping one on and rinsing off after 20 seconds, you’re not getting the most out of your sacred first PM step (and you’re definitely going through your $$$ tub much quicker).

Emulsifying while using a cleansing balm is the milky transformation that happens when water meets the oil in the formula, and is what helps the product work better.

The key is to massage the balm around your dry face first before you introduce a splash of water. Once you add water and work it in further, the formula shifts milky and can lift even the most stubborn waterproof mascara properly.

This applies to oil cleansers too, as long as the primary ingredient is oil. After emulsifying, rinse clean, then follow with your second cleanse or move straight to your serums depending on your skin type.

How Much Product Are You Actually Using?

The golden rule in skincare is more is not better. This extends to many steps, besides sunscreen of course, which most people underapply.

This is partly thanks to skincare just feeling lovely to pile on, and part us seeing content online that more generously layers on products for the sake of visually showing textures.

Don’t worry, your active products will still work cutting back the physical amount you use, and might just work even better.

Here’s a rough guide to make sure you’re not using more than needed:

  • Cleanser: roughly the size of a 10-cent coin
  • Retinol: a pea-sized amount on retinol nights
  • Serum: three to four drops
  • Toner: one shake of the bottle
  • Sunscreen: ¼ teaspoon for the face

Are You Doubling Up on Active Ingredients Without Realising?

I am very guilty of ingredient chasing, especially early in my skincare journey. The truth is, you might already be using that trending ingredient! Audit your routine, because your cleanser, toner, serum, and moisturiser might all contain the same key active.

A (very) rough guide: if the same ingredient appears in the first two lines of multiple products, or is prominently labelled on the front of several products in your routine, that’s a sign to reassess.

For example, using salicylic acid in your cleanser, toner, serum, and moisturiser in the same evening is a lot for most skin types – and depending on your skin, those products might be better rotated across the week rather than stacked in one night.

If your skin has been feeling reactive lately, this is one of the first things I review, and that helps others navigating skincare a lot.

Pat Dry – Don’t Rub

Skin is more sensitive immediately after cleansing. The friction involved in cleansing is already a disruption to your skin’s microbiome and barrier, so following that up by roughly rubbing your face dry with a towel isn’t doing you any favours.

Pat gently instead. The area around your eyes is especially delicate – if you’re someone who rubs their eyes regularly (again, guilty), it’s worth trying to break that habit, and not just for the cumulative effect on collagen over time.

It can also cause blood vessels to break, compounding the bloodshot eyes and even worsening dark circles.

Apply Skincare with Less Pressure

Following on from that: the same principle applies to how you apply products generally, and it does take a while to unlearn kneading your face like dough.

Pressing and patting – using upward strokes – is gentler on skin than pulling or dragging, and it also helps products layer more cleanly, which reduces pilling.

A few practical ways to do this:

  • Warm products between your fingers before pressing them onto your face
  • Use your ring finger to apply eye cream – it applies the least pressure
  • If you use a physical scrub, try applying it with just your pinkies to keep the pressure appropriate, using little circles

Cleanse for Longer in the PM

Sixty full seconds. I’m not kidding, nor is LaBeautyologist, the genius behind the #60secondrule. This is the step that has changed my skin forever, and I’ll tell anyone who listens.

Make sure you’ve already cleared makeup and SPF with a first cleanse or micellar water – then go in for a proper 60-second second cleanse to actually clean the skin itself. Longer contact time gives the product more opportunity to lift what’s accumulated over the day.

Have Some Bare Nights With No Actives

You don’t need to use an active ingredient every single evening, and your skin probably doesn’t want you to.

Nights focused on hydration and barrier repair are just as (if not more) important than your retinol or exfoliation nights.

While you’re at it, keep a keen eye on what a compromised skin barrier looks like for your skin type and skin tone. Signs include redness or purpleness, stinging or tingling, persistent tightness, and sudden breakouts.

Not Sure If a Product Is Working? Put It in the Fridge

If you’re on the fence about a product – or perhaps it’s not clearly helping… but you’re not ready to bin it – the fridge is a good holding zone.

Cooler temperatures help products stay fresh, and buys you more time to test it properly without the guilt of it expiring. This is particularly helpful for Vit C serums that can be more fussy.

Still keep an eye on any changes in texture or smell, and pay attention to the period-after-opening symbol on the packaging.

Sometimes Less Really Is More

Sorry it’s cliche, but it is ultimately the best thing you can do for your skin.

The last free skincare tip is simply: sometimes the best thing you can do is stop using a step altogether.

If your skin has been feeling off – more reactive, more congested, different from how it used to behave – and you’ve recently added a product that was viral, or felt nice to use, or just crept into your routine without much thought, that product might be worth putting on pause.

Your skincare routine can and ideally should bring you joy, it’s fun to embrace trends, but not at the cost of your skin health and misaligning your overall goals.

Are you going to try any of these tips? What would you add? I’d love to know in the comments below.
