How to Build Better Beauty Shopping Habits | JANUARY 2026

How to Build Better Beauty Shopping Habits | JANUARY 2026

Beauty lovers know the feeling: a new launch drops, a sale lands in your inbox, and suddenly your wish list has doubled in size. This month, we’re exploring practical ways to shop more intentionally without taking the fun out of beauty. From low-buy and no-buy strategies to loyalty programs, cashback apps and wishlist tools, we’re sharing the approaches helping beauty enthusiasts spend smarter in 2026.

We’ve also rounded up thoughtful questions to ask before making a purchase, tips for finding the best deals, and resources for anyone interested in the science and business behind beauty products.

If you love beauty (and as an extension love shopping it), we’re excited share not only how to get the best deals, but also the honest questions to ask to make sure a purchase is actually the best thing for you, your skin, and your budget.

We’ve included examples and a list you can screenshot and favourite in your photos for every time you’ve got a beauty decision.

All The Ways We’re Keeping Our Beauty Spending Down

Before we jump into how to get the best deals and discounts, let’s look at how we approach spending.

If you’ve made a New Year’s resolution to shop less or spend more mindfully, this section is for you.

Note: This is a choose-your-own-adventure guide. We aren’t – and won’t ever – tell you what to do with your money. Pick the guidelines that fit you.

No-Buys

A no-buy means choosing not to purchase anything, full stop – but it can fall into a few categories.

Examples include:

  • A category no-buy. “I’m not buying any blush this year – even if I see a new launch, a sale, or finish one.”
  • Replacement-only no-buys. “I’m not buying any lip products unless I completely finish one I already own.”
  • Store-specific. “I’m not buying anything from [retailer] this year, regardless of sales or exclusives.” “I’m not buying any makeup while grocery shopping.”
  • Time-bound. “I’m doing a no-buy for three months, meaning no beauty purchases at all during that time.”
  • Full beauty. “I’m not buying any beauty products this year – skincare, makeup, fragrance, all of it.”

Low-Buys

A low-buy is similar, but with limits rather than a full stop. This can be fun to gamify to what motivates you, or suits your beauty stash best.

Here’s some examples:

  • Quantity low-buys. “I can buy one blush this year, and only after I finish two I already own.”
  • Planned purchases. “Rhode is launching this February at MECCA. I’ll buy two items from the launch, one item during my birthday week in June, and another when I graduate in November.”
  • Category. “I’m allowing myself skincare refills only, but no makeup purchases.”
  • Based on budget. “I have $300 total to spend on beauty this year, and once it’s gone, it’s gone.”
  • One-in, one-out. “For every new product I buy, I must fully finish one in the same category first.”

Have You Heard Of Project Pan?

Many people pair this approach with Project Pan or Project Panning, which means using products until you hit the base or finish them completely.

Need inspiration? Visit r/ProjectPan on Reddit. Users share what they’re using and finishing, as well as any beauty stashes they’re keen to work on.

These methods help reduce impulse buys, and you’d be surprised how exciting beauty can feel again when it isn’t everywhere you look.

10 Questions Worth Asking Yourself Before You Buy (Screenshot This 📸)

Before checking out, pause and ask yourself:

  1. Even if this is the best product in the world for my skin, can I afford to repurchase it consistently over time? Skincare works best when it’s consistent, which isn’t easy if it’s out of budget.
  2. Do I already own something similar? Try swatching lipsticks and blushes to compare colours and tones.
  3. Do the same active ingredients already show up in my cleanser, toner, serum, or moisturiser?
  4. Was this product actually made for my skin type and concerns? Do a deeper dive.
  5. Have I looked at reviews from creators or customers with similar skin to mine – not just hype or first impressions?
  6. Does this genuinely bring me joy? You might be repurchasing steps you don’t need out of habit.
  7. Will this realistically fit into my existing routine, or am I buying it for a ‘fantasy routine’ I don’t follow?
  8. Do I know how long it will take me to use this up before it expires?
  9. Am I buying this because I need it, or because it’s on sale and feels like a great deal?
  10. Would I still want this if I had to pay full price?

Now that our consciences are clear after sharing our shop with intention pointers, let’s talk about how we shop smart and get the absolute best deals – which, ironically, is sometimes an extension of shopping with intention.

Here’s How To Shop Smart And Save

There are a few saving hacks we swear by. These are our absolute favourites that keep our head above water.

🛒 Newsletter And Cart Discounts

You already know signing up to a brand’s newsletter often unlocks an instant discount, but do you know of this trick?

Purposely abandon your cart even when you want to shop, and many brands (and retailers) will follow up with an incentive (usually better than the newsletter discount) to complete your purchase.

💌 Loyalty Programs Aren’t Cringey Anymore

We know there were many brand loyalty programs that were just about vague points. In 2026, brands know they have to work hard to keep shoppers coming back.

Many now offer early access to new launches, full-sized birthday gifts, generous exclusive discounts, free products, events, and more.

Ones we love:

🛍️ Shop Directly From Brands (Rather Than Through Retailers)

Retailers take a large percentage of every sale – sometimes up to 80%.

When you shop directly, brands have better margins and can run sales more often, offer better bundles (that are already discounted), have gifts with purchase (including deluxe samples), and sometimes sell exclusive products like refills.

These offers compound really well when combined with other methods on this list.

🧡 Get Money Back When You Shop With ShopBack

You might have already heard of ShopBack, or maybe you signed up years ago and forgot about your account. It’s a platform that gives you money back when you shop, which may seem small at first but adds up quickly.

We’ve seen beauty buyers rack up hundreds through ShopBack, and it always reminds us we should be using it more.

🩷 Use Sortd To Track When Items Go On Sale

You can create public or private wish lists through Sortd for almost anything, alongside registries for any event.

It’s available as both a mobile app and a Chrome extension, and a good place to park your next buy while you think through your potential purchase.

Better yet? It’ll notify you whenever an item goes on sale, that way you’ll never miss a price drop.
