For those of us with sensitive and redness-prone skin, finding the right sunscreen can feel like a never-ending process.

Many formulas available to us are either too harsh or simply not soothing enough.

When your skin is sensitive, trying something new isn’t always fun – the more you test, the more likely it is to react. Many formulas are either too heavy or not gentle enough.

Some irritate, others pill under makeup, making the search for sunscreen feel endless.

Here’s my honest experience with this zinc-based sunscreen – including swatch pictures, a deep dive into the hero ingredients that can help support your skin barrier in the formula, and how it performs as a makeup primer.

The BeautyBarrier SPF50 is designed to simplify your morning routine by combining sun protection with skincare and makeup prep. I am a 3-step skincare and makeup kind of gal and this speaks to my soul.

BeautyBarrier uses 24.5% zinc oxide to deliver broad spectrum SPF50 protection, helping shield the skin from both UVA and UVB rays.

What sets this formula apart is its 2-in-1 function as a smoothing, skin-perfecting primer and sunscreen.

Rather than feeling heavy or chalky, it’s formulated to sit beautifully under makeup with a soft-focus finish for glowy, healthy-looking skin.

Key features:

  • Mineral sunscreen with 24.5% zinc oxide
  • Broad spectrum SPF50 protection
  • Primer-style texture for use under makeup
  • Formulated with barrier-supportive ingredients
  • Suitable for sensitive skin
  • Acne-prone skin friendly
  • Fragrance free

For anyone after a simple skincare and makeup routine, think of it as a sunscreen that primes while it protects – one formula doing the work of two.

My Skin Type: Sensitive And Redness-Prone Skin

As someone with sensitive, redness-prone skin, I never skip sunscreen (yes even indoors).

I’ve always found using zinc on my skin on my rosacea flare ups days incredibly soothing and calming.

As soon as zinc touches my inflamed skin, it’s an instant comfort. I’ve been a mineral SPF devotee since I was 16 (2004, for reference).

Back then, zinc formulas were thick, clumpy, greasy and left a white cast so bright, I remember a friend in high school once said to me: “what’s that white stuff on your face?”. It could probably be seen from space.

That said, zinc oxide remains the hero ingredient behind most mineral sunscreens and one my sensitive skin still swears by.

Known for its gentle nature, it’s often preferred by those with reactive or rosacea-prone skin.

During the cooler months, when my rosacea tends to flare, I lean on soothing, non-irritating formulas to keep things calm in every skincare step and sunscreen is no exception.

If you’re searching for a rosacea-safe sunscreen, zinc-based formulas are worth trying.

Key Barrier Soothing Ingredients in Naked Sundays Newest Launch: The BeautyBarrier SPF50

Beyond its sun protection, the BeautyBarrier SPF50 includes several skin barrier-loving ingredients.

Zinc Oxide (24.5%)

Zinc oxide is a mineral or “inorganic” UV filter that provides broad spectrum protection by primarily absorbing UVA and UVB rays, with some additional reflection and scattering.

It’s widely appreciated and used in formulations for its gentle, everyday wear.

Centella Asiatica (Cica)

Centella Asiatica is a well-researched botanical with a long history in dermatology and cosmeceuticals.

Its active compounds have been found to work across multiple pathways relevant to skin barrier support, hydration, and reducing the appearance of irritation.

Clinical studies have reported improvements in skin comfort and redness in participants with sensitive skin after consistent use, with good tolerability.

It’s a go-to ingredient in formulations designed for gentle, fragrance-free routines.

Watermelon Seed Oil

Watermelon seed oil (also known as Citrullus lanatus seed oil) is a lightweight, non-comedogenic plant oil rich in linoleic acid, oleic acid, and fatty acids shown to reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL).

The lightweight and nourishing oil helps maintain hydration without feeling heavy. It often contributes to a smoother, more comfortable skin finish.

Rice Amino Acids

Rice amino acids are the building blocks of protein in skincare, known for their moisture-binding ability and role in supporting skin softness and elasticity.

Derived from rice protein, they’re broken down into smaller molecules the skin can more easily absorb.

Their moisture-binding properties and role in supporting skin softness and barrier function makes rice amino acids a welcomed addition in the BeautyBarrier formula, supporting that comfortable, skin-ready base it’s known for.

Why Zinc Based Sunscreen Is Often Preferred for Sensitive Skin

When choosing between mineral and chemical sunscreens, many people with sensitive skin gravitate towards zinc-based formulas.

Mineral vs Chemical Sunscreen

Mineral sunscreens use physical filters like zinc oxide to protect the skin from UVA and UVB rays.

Despite the common belief that they work by sitting on the skin and reflecting UV like a mirror, research shows that zinc oxide primarily works by absorbing UV radiation – with reflection and scattering playing a much smaller role than traditionally thought.

For many people, the preference for mineral over chemical formulas comes down to individual tolerability.

Mineral filters are generally considered gentler for everyday use – particularly in fragrance-free formulations – and tend to be less likely to cause irritation for those with reactive skin.

Broad Spectrum Protection

Zinc oxide is one of the few sunscreen filters capable of providing comprehensive protection against both UVA and UVB rays, making it a reliable choice for daily wear.

Gentle Comfort For Reactive Skin

Many people who prefer fragrance-free, minimal-ingredient formulas find zinc-based SPFs a comfortable daily option.

Zinc oxide’s well-documented anti-inflammatory properties make it a frequently cited ingredient in dermatology on skin barrier care (like zinc-based french pharmacy cica creams), and it remains one of the most widely studied mineral UV filters available.

Described as a smoothing, skin-perfecting primer with a soft-focus finish, the BeautyBarrier SPF50 delivers on its promise.

It’s lightweight and creamy, spreading easily without tugging or pilling.

Once applied, it leaves a silky-smooth base with a soft-focus effect – the kind of foundation (pun intended) that makes the rest of your makeup routine easier.

Iron oxides in the formula work to offer a tint to offset white-cast on my skin tone, and instantly blurs imperfections and reduces the appearance of redness.

It works just as well on no-makeup days when you simply want a sun-protected, even finish.

How It Wears Under Makeup: The Verdict

One of the standout features of this sunscreen is its beautiful performance as a priming base.

As shown in the photos below, makeup glides effortlessly my skin, with foundation blending seamlessly and remaining smooth and even throughout the day – without any separation or patchiness.

I found that it helped minimise the appearance of pores and redness. There was no pilling or separation, even when layered with skincare products.

For those looking for a sunscreen that works to prime your skin for makeup,, the BeautyBarrier SPF50 is one to try now.

How to Apply Zinc SPF Correctly

Where It Fits in Your Routine

Sunscreen should be applied as the final step in your morning skincare routine, just before makeup. Apply at least 20 minutes before heading outside to allow the formula to settle and form an even film on the skin.

How Much to Use

For adequate coverage, apply approximately ¼ teaspoon of sunscreen to the face. Don’t forget often-missed areas like the ears, neck (front and back), and décolletage.

Reapplication

To maintain protection throughout the day, reapply every 80 minutes when outdoors, and immediately after swimming or heavy sweating.

Some people find it easier to use a brush to stipple a mineral formula over makeup – a great option for sunscreen top-ups on the go.

SPF 50 Sunscreen Benefits

SPF50 provides a high level of protection against UVB rays, filtering out approximately 98% of UVB radiation when applied correctly, helping to prevent sunburn and supporting overall skin health.

Consistent daily sunscreen use is one of the most evidence-backed steps you can take for long-term skin health – regardless of weather or season, and is essential for maintaining the integrity of the skin barrier and reducing the visible effects of sun exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Naked Sundays BeautyBarrier SPF50 leave a white cast?

The formula contains iron oxides which help offset the natural white cast that comes with high-concentration zinc oxide – so while you may notice it briefly on application, it settles into the skin without leaving that chalky, grey finish older mineral formulas are known for. On deeper skin tones, cast may be more visible – worth keeping in mind if you sit on the deeper end of the shade spectrum. Naked Sundays has their mineral based BeautyScreen™ SPF50 Peptide Foundation Tint in 15 shades, which Praise has reviewed here for deep and dark skin tones: The Best Tinted Sunscreen for Dark Skin? Can you wear the Naked Sundays BeautyBarrier SPF50 under makeup?

Yes – and it was formulated with makeup-wearers in mind. The formula is specifically designed to function as a priming base, with a silky, soft-focus texture that foundation and concealer sit well over. In testing, my foundation didn’t pill or separate even when layered over multiple skincare products, and everything stayed smooth and even throughout the day.

What percentage of zinc oxide is in the Naked Sundays BeautyBarrier SPF50?

The BeautyBarrier contains 24.5% zinc oxide as its active ingredient – the UV filter responsible for its broad spectrum SPF50 protection.  Zinc oxide at this concentration provides coverage against both UVA and UVB rays.

How often should you reapply the Naked Sundays BeautyBarrier SPF50?

According to the product’s label directions, reapply every 80 minutes when outdoors, and immediately after swimming or heavy sweating. A buffing brush is a practical option for stippling the formula over makeup during the day without disturbing your base.

Is the Naked Sundays BeautyBarrier SPF50 fragrance free?

Yes, the BeautyBarrier is fragrance free. It’s also formulated without common irritants (like essential oils), which is part of why it suits those who tend to gravitate toward gentle, minimal-ingredient formulas for daily wear.
