Why Your Dark Spots Aren’t Lightening…

Not all DARK SPOTS are the same. Let me explain...

For the longest time, I have been trialling various dark spot serums from both Korean and western brands and I realised the term "dark spots" has been thrown around a lot!

It gets confusing to know exactly what it means.

What Are Dark Spots?

Dark spots are caused by an excess of melanin which darkens the skin.

They can be caused by environmental factors (such as sun exposure or acne) or caused hormonally (such as pregnancy or genetics)

Brown spots on the face refer to an increase of pigmentation – where skin produces an excess amount of melanin, resulting in the darkening of certain areas.

While this phenomenon is most often associated with sun exposure, a number of triggers can cause dark spots on the face.

Types Of Dark Spots:

Not all dark spots are the same! And hence are not treated the same.

Dark spots on the skin can arise from various causes, each presenting distinct characteristics.

Acne-related spots often manifest as redness or scarring, lingering long after the blemish has healed- referred to as PIH (Post-Inflammatory hyperpigmentation) and PIE (Post-Inflammatory Erythema).

UV radiation from sun exposure triggers the production of melanin, leading to sunspots or hyperpigmentation.

Genetics can predispose individuals to certain types of dark spots, making them more susceptible to pigmentation irregularities.

During pregnancy, hormonal fluctuations can induce melasma, resulting in dark patches, particularly on the face.

To effectively take care of your skin, you need to understand your dark spots. Treatment for your dark spots would be best understood by a Dermatologist.

Potential treatments can include:

  • Laser

  • Chemical Peels

  • IPL Therapy

  • Microdermabrasion

  • Prescription Retinoids

My At Home Recommendations:

The marketing behind using the term "dark spot" gets misused by consumers, such as us, with the pure assumption that it'll work for us!

But that might not be the case.

We must be mindful of the type of hyperpigmentation we have on our skin before we sought to buy a topical solution.
