Quick Summary: Alpha-H Liquid Gold has been the product skincare obsessives press into the hands of anyone willing to listen. I was, for a long time, not one of those people. Sensitive, acne-prone, and with a track record of frying my moisture barrier on overly aggressive glycolic acids – I kept it at arm’s length. Then I tried it anyway. This is what happened.
Key Takeaways:
- Alpha-H Liquid Gold is a 5% glycolic acid treatment that improves skin tone, texture, luminosity, and elasticity
- The formula’s pH balance is what sets it apart – strong enough to work, calibrated well enough to suit sensitive skin when used correctly
- It also contains Silk Proteins and Liquorice Root Extract for added brightening and pigment-fighting support
- Results are visible within a few uses for most skin types, particularly on texture and dullness
- Three nights a week is a good starting point; sensitive skin should begin at once or twice a week
- It should be used at night, on clean, dry skin – not layered with retinol, vitamin C, or other acids on the same evening
- The $19.95 Trial Kit is an excellent low-commitment entry point and comes with 21 days of pre-soaked pads
- There is now a Vitamin C version for those without sensitivities – particularly useful for sun spot concerns
- This is, in short, one of the few AHA products that has changed how I think about exfoliation
Who This Review Is For
Before we get into it: I have sensitive, acne-prone skin. I’ve historically had a bad time with glycolic acid – the kind of bad time that leaves your barrier compromised, your skin red and reactive for days (looking at you, The Ordinary Glycolic Toner), and your faith in exfoliants somewhat shattered. If that sounds familiar, keep reading. This one surprised me.
If you have robust skin with no sensitivity history? You’ll probably have an even better time with this than I did.
What Is Alpha-H Liquid Gold?
Alpha-H Liquid Gold Exfoliating Treatment is a leave-on glycolic acid toner that’s been a cult product in Australian skincare for years.
The formula is built around 5% glycolic acid – an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that works by loosening the bonds between dead skin cells, allowing them to shed more evenly.
The result, over time, is brighter, smoother, more even-toned skin. Clinical evidence backs this up: glycolic acid is one of the most studied AHAs for improving skin luminosity, texture, and even helps elasticity.
What Makes It Different?
What sets Liquid Gold apart from other glycolic acid products is its pH. The pH of an exfoliating acid formula determines both how deeply it penetrates (glycolic acid also is a smaller molecule, so gets deeper into the skin) and how irritating it’s likely to be.
Alpha-H has formulated Liquid Gold to sit at a level that’s effective without being too aggressive – which is precisely why it’s forgiving enough to buffer and adjust depending on your skin’s needs on any given week.
Beyond the glycolic, it also contains Silk Proteins and Liquorice Root Extract. Both support brightening and pigmentation reduction – useful additions if post-inflammatory marks (PIH) or uneven tone are part of your concern.

My Experience + Before And After

My first propper introduction to Liquid Gold was doing the #liquidgoldchallenge, a 21-day trial using the Trial Kit. Three weeks later, I understood what all the fuss was about.
The AHA worked particularly well on my cheeks. Please note I didn’t have any active or open blemishes at the time.
Texture I’d been throwing targeted blemish products at for months – products that never quite got there – started to melt away.
The results that surprised me most: the pores on my nose were visibly less congested and the dark discolouration I’d accepted as permanent looked lighter.
Pigmented scarring, which I’d had lingering for months, improved in appearance in a way I hadn’t expected from an exfoliant.
I did not break out and my skin barrier didn’t feel more sensitised or compromised. My very sensitive, acne-prone skin survived consistent AHA use (right?!) – and, eventually, started to thrive on it.

How to Use Alpha-H Liquid Gold

Use it at night. Glycolic acid increases photosensitivity, so this is non-negotiable. Apply it on clean, dry skin – not damp or fresh off a hydrating toner.
Wait a minute or two before your next step. On the same evening, do not use retinol or any other actives. I’d even be hesitant to use vitamin C (depends on your skin type ofcourse).
Liquid Gold is an active step and it counts as your one active for that night.
My PM Routine on Exfoliating Nights

- Step 1: Cleansing balm, I’m currently using the Alpha-H Melting Moment Cleansing Balm
- Step 2: Foaming cleanser, loving the Urban Jungle Saké Bomb Gel Cleanser at the moment
- Step 3: Liquid Gold on dry skin (wait two minutes before next step)
- Step 4: Moisturiser, I’ve just finished up the Dermal Therapy Acne Control Lotion, very underrated!
- Step 5: Eye cream, I’m trialing The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Eye Serum, I’ll be sure to update
- Step 6: Barrier cream if my skin needs it, I love and won’t ever stop talking about the SVR Cicavit+ HPPI Cream
How Often Should You Exfoliate?
When using Liquid Gold, three nights a week works well for most skin types – spaced out, not consecutive.
If your skin is having a sensitive week, bring it back to once or twice.
If things are feeling dull or you’ve had a particularly good barrier week / feeling extra congested after a big makeup day, you can nudge it up to four nights.
There are no hard and fast rules for exfoliating, and that’s actually the point.
Liquid Gold is strong enough that you don’t need to overdo it to see results.
If you’re acne-prone or sensitive, starting at once a week and building slowly is the move. Follow with moisturiser every time, no exceptions.
Also note, we’re talking about exfoliating here, which you might already be doing in other steps without knowing it. Now is a good time to check your cleanser and serums, even that milky toner you love.
You might be exfoliating multiple times without even knowing it.
Is Alpha-H Liquid Gold Safe for Acne-Prone, Sensitive Skin?
It can be. It is for me! Whether it works for sensitive skin depends on your barrier health at the time and how you introduce it.
The key is starting slow – once a week, following with moisturiser, and keeping other actives off the table on the same night.
If you’re currently dealing with a compromised barrier, hold off entirely until your skin is stable. An AHA on a damaged barrier is the wrong move (and will be very sore), regardless of how well-formulated it is.
As a rule of thumb, if there’s anything open, bleeding, or weeping, it’s a big no. You can target exfoliate too, just using it in areas that aren’t sore, but listen to your skin and keep a keen eye on redness.

The Alpha-H Liquid Gold Range
Alpha-H Liquid Gold Exfoliating Treatment, $76.95

The original and, for sensitive and acne-prone skin, still the one to start with. The full size lasts ages, so consider the trial kit (linked below) if you’re on the fence.
Quick points:
- 5% glycolic acid calibrated to a skin-friendly pH
- Silk Proteins and Liquorice Root Extract for added brightening support
- Clinically proven to improve tone, luminosity, texture, and elasticity
- Versatile enough to buffer use to your skin’s needs week by week
Alpha-H Liquid Gold Trial Kit, $19.95

If you’re not ready to commit to the full size, this is where to start. Twenty-one days of pre-soaked pads that cover more than just your face – neck, chest, elbows, heels. Each pad goes further than you’d expect.
The kit comes with clear instructions, which makes it a good entry point for people who are newer to AHAs and unsure about where exfoliants fit in a routine.
Quick points:
- Twenty-one generously soaked application pads
- Covers face, neck, chest, and body
- Clear instructions included for AHA beginners
- Lower commitment, same results
Alpha-H Liquid Gold Exfoliating Treatment with Vitamin C, $86.95
I haven’t personally tried this one – I have a vitamin C allergy (yes, I get serious FOMO), so it’s not one I can review from experience.
But if you don’t have sensitivities and your main concern is sun spots or age-related discolouration, this version is worth looking at. The addition of vitamin C alongside glycolic acid makes it a stronger option for brightening.
Alpha-H Liquid Gold + Vitamin C Trial Kit, $9.95
The lower-commitment entry for the vitamin C version. At under $10, it’s an easy way to test the formula before committing.
My Final Verdict
Alpha-H Liquid Gold is one of those products that earns its reputation. The cult status is very earned, and works for a wider range of skin types than you’d expect from a glycolic acid product.
If you’ve been burned by AHAs before, the Trial Kit is the lowest-risk way to find out whether your skin and this formula get along.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes – and for most skin types, results show up within a few uses, particularly on texture and overall radiance. Pigmentation takes longer but does improve with consistent use.
It can be, with the right introduction. Start at once a week, follow with moisturiser, and don’t combine it with other actives on the same night. If your barrier is currently compromised, wait until it’s stable.
Some tingling is normal. Stinging or burning isn’t. If you’re experiencing the latter, you’re either using it too frequently, applying it to damp skin, or your barrier isn’t ready for it yet. Initial purging is possible but should resolve within a few weeks.
Smoother texture and brighter skin within a few uses. Meaningful improvement in pigmentation and scarring takes four to eight weeks of consistent use.
