Quick Summary: I am still congestion-prone in my late twenties, which means most “nourishing” creams break me out within a fortnight. These are the eight best moisturisers for congestion-prone skin I’ve personally used down to the last drop, including a $20 pharmacy lotion to a splurge $90 pick.
The best moisturiser for congestion-prone skin, out of everything I emptied recently, is the Dermal Therapy Acne Control Lotion.
It wins on a few metrics for me, including reliability (easy to find), great texture that plays well with other skincare and makeup steps, and is in a generous 85ml tube. It has never broken me out, and I recommend it often to people with fussy skin that like something lighter but restoring.
Below are seven more moisturisers I used up recently, ranked by whether I’d buy them again with my own money.
A note on what “congestion-prone” means, I’m not talking about cystic acne or anything persistent. I mean the bumpy, clogged, under-the-skin texture and lumps that tend to be small and that show up when a moisturiser is too occlusive for your face or skin type.
If that’s you, the instinct to skip moisturiser entirely is not the way to go! You generally want more hydration, just delivered lighter (sometimes in lighter layers).

My Skin, and How I Chose These Eight
Every product below was used to empty, over roughly 6 months, in both Australian summer and winter.
No product was assessed from a single week of use – and if you’ve ever wondered how long skincare actually takes to work, that’s exactly why! Especially when using a moisturiser that has a promised effect or actives.
Quick points about my skin type:
- I am very congestion-prone – yes, still, at almost 30!
- I usually layer hydration underneath, with either a hydrating serum or a toner
- I like using a facial oil in the PM on nights I’m not using my gentle vitamin A
- Flexible is best in my opinion; if a formula runs a little light, I find a way to make it work
- Anything too classically “heavy” breaks me out
My criteria included: did it break me out, did it layer under sunscreen and makeup, did it hold up across seasons, and did I reach for it again once the tube was done (these were all emptied, spoiler alert).

Best Moisturiser for Congestion-Prone Skin Overall: Thirsty Turtl Desert Glow Brightening Gel-Crème, $65.00

A great one-and-done cream, thanks to the niacinamide and antioxidant focus.
So definitely more worth the splurge for me in terms of my skin concerns – it does enough on its own that I can skip a serum entirely.
The texture is almost similar to the Alpha-H Firming Collagen Repair Cream further down this list in terms of luxe feel and being ultra plush. Layers great, underrated brand all round. Has a noticeable weight on the skin, so if you’re after something weightless this isn’t for you.
Quick points:
- 5% niacinamide, desert tomato, green tea
- Plush texture
- Layers under sunscreen and makeup
- Australian, Indigenous co-owned
Who it’s for: congestion-prone and combination skin that wants a one-and-done step with active ingredients built in.
Maybe consider: it’s harder to buy than it should be. It isn’t stocked in the major beauty retailers yet, so you’re ordering direct. I’d love to see it somewhere like Sephora Australia.

Best Budget Moisturiser for Clogged Pores: Dermal Therapy Acne Control Lotion, $16.99

Gah, this whole range is so bloody good. I go out of my way to restock this when it’s out, which is the highest praise I give any basic – it’s a perfect basic that isn’t too “active” and it’s a nice level of hydrating for a lotion.

It has a tiny bit of a plush gel feeling, rather than a watery or weightless gel, that I think lots of acne-prone skin friends need. Just that extra barrier support that isn’t heavy.
Quick points:
- Sub-$25, stocked in most Australian pharmacies
- Plush gel finish, not occlusive
- Matching cleanser is a 10/10 too
- 85ml! Not 50ml
Who it’s for: anyone who wants barrier support without the heaviness, whether or not they’re dealing with breakouts.
Maybe consider: it lives in an acne range, so plenty of people who’d love it never pick it up.

Best Lightweight Gel Moisturiser: BYOMA Moisturizing Gel-Cream, $27.00

Oily skin types, or anyone that hates any weight – this one is for you. It was too light for me, but I used it up layering it with hydrating toners and wearing it under heavier sunscreen on those days.
The tri-ceramide and niacinamide combination means it’s still doing barrier work even at that weight, which is why it survives being a base layer rather than the whole routine.
It’s also one of my favourite products for hot, humid, and awfully sweaty days.
Quick points:
- Close to weightless, no film or tackiness
- Tri-ceramide complex, niacinamide, green tea
- Layers over toners and essences
Who it’s for: oily skin, humid months, and anyone whose complaint about moisturiser is that they can feel it.
Maybe consider: if your skin is anything other than oily, you’ll likely need a layer underneath it. I preferred their richer cream version – noticing a theme?

Best Moisturiser for Summer and AM Layering: Boring Without You Face Flood, $34.99

I skipped using a serum with this because it has a nice amount of niacinamide. Great for AM – it’s light, breaks to a watery finish, and layers well under sunscreen and makeup.
I enjoyed it in summer when my skin tends to be more shiny, and crucially it doesn’t have that weird matte oil-control feeling some moisturisers have.
Definitely for classic combination skin types, but I think if you use heavier SPF you’d like this too.
Quick points:
- Light, watery finish, doesn’t pill under SPF
- Enough niacinamide to replace a serum step
- No artificial matte or powdery feel
- Stocked at Adore Beauty and Priceline
Who it’s for: classic combination skin, warmer months, and heavy sunscreen users.
Maybe consider: it’s a summer specialist rather than a year-round staple. In colder months I wanted more. Their newer REM repair formula is far more my speed and I use it AM and PM fairly often.

Best Moisturiser for a Compromised Barrier: SVR Cicavit+, $36.00

Super cocooning, with a classical French feel that locks in everything and restores. Super nostalgic for me, because it saved my skin barrier when it was at its absolute most tragic.
The brand’s anti-mark focus is the reason I kept a tube going – in my own experience my skin doesn’t scar as dark and recovers quicker with it.
Quick points:
- Cocooning, restorative texture
- No rose scent
- Easier to find since SVR landed at MYER
- I prefer it to La Roche-Posay, Avène, and Bioderma
Who it’s for: short-term barrier rescue rather than daily use, especially post-actives or post-breakout.
Maybe consider: it’s rich by design, so it’s a repair step and not an everyday moisturiser if you’re congestion-prone. The formula has also been reformulated recently, and the new texture is very different – I haven’t had enough active spots to road test it properly yet.

Best Sensory Experience: APSKIN Ultra Antioxidant Face Cream, $49.00

I have lost count of how many of these I’ve been through, and I’ve been using it for years.
It is one of those products that feels and smells perfect – I’d say it’s a light cream texture, not a lotion, and it layers great with everything.
It smells like fresh apples, and not in an artificial way; the activated phenolics are apple-derived, so the scent is the formula rather than added fragrance. I’ve found my skin is noticeably happier and healthier when using it.
Quick points:
- Light cream texture, layers with everything
- 85g, a lot of product for the price
- Made in Australia, patented activated phenolics
- Smells like fresh apples, not artificial
Who it’s for: anyone who wants an antioxidant step folded into their moisturiser, and anyone scent-sensitive to synthetic fragrance.
Maybe consider: it used to be a Woolworths top-up staple and is now much harder for people to get their hands on, which is heartbreaking. The packaging has also changed, so don’t panic when the bottle looks different.

Best Value And Luxe: Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+, $66.00

At 125ml it’s a higher-end pick that’s worth it in my opinion. Looking at the ml of product might surprise you how expensive some “affordable” picks are compared to iconic formulas like this that are at MYER, Adore Beauty and the like.
It’s more rich than you might expect but not super heavy, and I really enjoyed using it up, especially in the colder months and when I was more consistently using vitamin A.
If dry or sensitive skin is your baseline, it sits alongside our other face moisturisers to try for dry, sensitive skin that still won’t cause congestion.
Quick points:
- 125ml, which changes the value maths
- Rich without the classic heavy-cream feeling
- Works alongside a retinoid in winter great
Who it’s for: normal to dry skin, mature skin, and cold-weather routines.
Maybe consider: it’s still a teeny bit heavy for my skin, and it doesn’t want to be layered up in large amounts. If congestion is your main concern, start higher up this list.

Best Splurge: Alpha-H Firming Collagen Repair Cream, $90.00

Yes, it’s gorgeous. But to touch grass for a second, this is one of those products I use and think “woah, that’s amazing… but would I buy it with my own money?” The texture is a flexible gel-cream that I haven’t felt before, and it’s worth trying in store – not heavy, but it coats the skin really well. I found it very plumping.
Quick points:
- Flexible gel-cream, worth feeling in store
- Coats without weight, plumps noticeably
- Collagen amino acids
- At Adore Beauty and Sephora Australia
Who it’s for: people who like to splurge on their basics and want the sensory experience of a luxury cream.
Maybe consider: if firming and pro-aging are what you’re after, I think the money is better spent on a vitamin A or a targeted serum. Each to their own – but I wouldn’t repurchase this one myself.

What to Look For in a Moisturiser If You’re Congestion-Prone
Look for a formula that’s light in weight but not light in hydration, and plan to layer rather than expecting one product to do everything.
Congestion-prone skin usually reacts to occlusive richness, not to moisture itself – so the fix is delivering more hydration in thinner layers, not less hydration overall.
Three Things Worth Checking:
- Texture over marketing. “Gel-cream” covers everything from watery to super rich. Feel it in store where you can
- Niacinamide. DermNet notes that nicotinamide reduces facial sebum production and has anti-inflammatory action, which is why it turns up in six of the eight picks above
- A hydrating layer underneath. A toner or hydrating serum for dehydrated skin lets you use a lighter moisturiser without ending up dehydrated, which is the trap most oily-skin routines fall into
It’s also worth knowing which ingredients are doing the heavy lifting – we’ve broken down the overlooked skin protectants behind barrier repair separately.
And one thing to stop doing (please!) skipping moisturiser to control oil. It tends to backfire, and we’ve covered why in our guide to barrier repair for acne-prone skin.
Final Thoughts
If you’re congestion-prone and you want one moisturiser to buy, go for the Dermal Therapy Acne Control Lotion or the Thirsty Turtl Desert Glow Brightening Gel-Crème.
If your barrier is currently in trouble rather than just congested, SVR Cicavit+ is an amazing SOS, but best layered over moisturisers rather than used in place of one.
The rest are good products that suit different skin and texture preferences. As always, the “best” moisturiser is mostly a question of what you like, mixed with what won’t cause congestion.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best moisturiser for congestion-prone skin in Australia?
Out of eight moisturisers I used to empty, the Dermal Therapy Acne Control Lotion and the Thirsty Turtl Desert Glow Brightening Gel-Crème was the best for congestion-prone skin.
Should I skip moisturiser if my skin is oily or breaks out?
No. Skipping moisturiser often makes oily skin overcompensate and produce more oil, which can worsen both breakouts and dullness. A lightweight, barrier-supporting moisturiser layered over a hydrating toner or serum is generally the better approach for congestion-prone skin.
Does niacinamide help with clogged pores?
Niacinamide can help. DermNet reports that nicotinamide reduces facial sebum production – the oil that contributes to non-inflamed comedones – and has anti-inflammatory action. It’s the reason niacinamide appears in most of the moisturisers on this list, usually at concentrations around 2–5%.
What’s the difference between a gel moisturiser and a gel-cream?
A gel moisturiser is typically water-light and absorbs almost instantly, while a gel-cream carries more emollient and leaves a slight cushion on the skin. Congestion-prone skin often does better with a gel-cream like the BYOMA Moisturizing Gel-Cream, which delivers barrier support without the occlusive weight of a traditional cream.
Can I use a facial oil if I’m congestion-prone?
Many people can. I use one in the PM on nights I’m not using my gentle vitamin A, layered as the final step. Introduce it on its own for a couple of weeks so you can tell what your skin is actually reacting to, and skip it on nights you use actives.
